It would seem the hardest client to design for is yourself.

This is about 2 weeks worth of concept, content, and design planning.

The concept was the easy part, I knew what kind of look and feel I wanted the new layout to have. I wanted to contrast the chaos and grit of grunge design clean and sleek vectors and typography.

The content was a bit harder. I wanted to remove sections from my current site, but I wasn't sure what all I wanted to include. The content changed all the way up to last night when I decided to nix the "about" section and instead put in a blog.

The most challenging thing about the design was getting the colors I wanted. I attempted a variation of the red / blue / yellow color combination, but it never seemed to work quite right. In the end, I decided to cut the blue and just use different values of tan / yellow / brown with red acting as the accent color.

I'll post the other pages as I design them. Adding a blog section has given me a lot to think about in terms of how the blog should look and function.

Most of the florals are brushes created by coolwing [ [link] ].

Fonts are Century Gothic (using Helvetica / Arial as a fallback in case it's not installed) and Georgia, with the Are You Design logo being Walkway Bold.

"It would seem the hardest client to design for is yourself. " Very true. I think you've done a nice job here of incorporating different styles without it being overwhelming. I like the aged look it has; its quite lovely.

Yeah, it may be a good idea to incorporate some kind of "about me" page in there. I guess if the point is to get contract work, the client will probably want to know at least a little bit about me. I'm not sure it will be enough to warrant it's own page, but there may be an about me blurb that goes with the blog - a short "about the author" paragraph or something.

Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, I struggled with the "overwhelming" thing early on in the process. I really wanted it to kind of be over the top chaos, but the more I worked on it the more I removed until I had something that felt more like it had a purpose and was less random.

I love the linear design you seem to favor. I think it functions graphically a whole lot better than the whole "up down" thing that almost all websites these days have going for them. You should link me when you're finished!
